Memorial Fountain

The Palics Memorial Fountain was completed in 1912 to mark the completion of the representative buildings of the Palics Spa and the Subotica City Hall. It was designed by the renowned Hungarian architects Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab. Today, the memorial fountain is one of Palics’s best-known landmarks and a protected cultural heritage site. Created in the spirit of Hungarian Art Nouveau, the fountain consists of two basins, each with three segments. Around the central stone column, tall reliefs depict a catfish, a wild duck, and a coot, from which water trickles into the basin. Today, inscriptions detailing the history of Palics can be read in the niches of the central column; originally, this space was adorned with poems by Dezső Kosztolányi. Over the course of its more than century-long history, the Memorial Fountain has undergone quite an adventurous journey itself. In the 1960s, it was relocated in front of the Women’s Beach Baths, then returned to its original location in 1981, where it was renovated. It was restored again in 1995, and in 2026, another comprehensive renovation began so that this special monument can continue to tell future generations about Palics’s past for many years to come.
